I saw art, I saw ancient statuary, I saw my friend’s family name written in gold next to the likes of Da Vinci, Durer and Michelangelo… and I saw guys with assault rifles.
The art was really quite beautiful, but I wished I read French better than I do. Phrasebook helped. Also wished I had more time. Back in August unless something untoward happens.
I just like the light in this one:
Stumbled upon an area where they were either packing or unpacking statuary.
And there’s this:
This is one part of a ceiling. My friend’s name is the bottom left.
Same ceiling, cornerpiece.
Two saints walk into a bar…
I found these in the “Saints With Things In Their Heads” wing. Yes, I know I’m being juvenile.
I love the look on this piece.
There’s a term for this and it’s totally escaped me. It’s a two-sided portrait.
I really like this piece. It’s got balls. And yes I need to better educate myself.
Okay, these were extraordinary. The detail is incredible.
This is a detail from the last one. Unbelievable. I’ve noted down the artists, and want to get better acquainted with them.
The view out the window…
… included men with machineguns.
They seemed to be searching the dumpster area. No idea what it was about, if anything.
Anyway, that’s sort-of my day at the Louvre. The photos that didn’t completely blow, at any rate.
Christophe is an economist for the French government. He predicted the GFC aslong with so many others. He now predicts massive inflation in the next five years. So he advises borrowing now, at a fixed interest rate.
Don’t say I never gives youse nuthin.
While I was spending today at the Louvre, R was at a bar in Brunswick with friends. She was texting me letting me know what she was doing and I was texting letting her know what I was doing.
Short story is I think I’ll be back in Paris after Edinburgh. Madre dios I hope one of those grants comes through… or I’m going to have to get a job.
I’m still not sure how I’m affording this.
Anyway: Louvre. My feet hurt. It needs at least two full days. All I saw was the European painters and the Roman sculpture, and that was a speed run. Sacreligious really. And next time I’m going to pay for one of those dorky audio things. All the plaques are in French. Grr. (Or i could get better at French.)
Tomorrow the British Museum’s Renaissance room. After rising at 0430, hiking to the Arc, and bussing it to CDG Roissy airport during a transport strike. Woohoo!

Is it bad of me that I saw those highly detailed paintings and thought “ye gods, 17th century Flickr!”
HA!
