At some point, though, I think someone's going to come along and improve on it in ways that refresh this sub-genre. On a technical level, it was quite clever how it was shot with the same lenses/angles/"look" of the films is was paying homage to (and accidentally sending-up). The train-crash was well handled, they nailed the retro look, and the acting of the three lead kids was very good. But I couldn't care for the Spielberg-formula characters or the Spielberg-formula storyline. I found myself laughing during the third act when they had a Shit Blows Up sequence for no apparent reason, with tanks and rockets and what looked like an entire suburb getting demolished in a scene cribbed from Saving Private Ryan. I couldn't care less by that point whether it was a re-telling of "Goonies" or "Aliens" or half a dozen Spielberg films...because, essentially, it was E.T. for the ADHD generation. I actually enjoyed the short film they tucked into the closing titles more than the main feature. The film didn’t do much for me.
