I made a change just now so it should take the first image in the post going forward, but you can also always overrule it from the post page in WP before you post...just scroll down beneath the entry and pick one.

Short story: my web guys did, yes (that'd be Kest Viator and her erstwhile designer offsider). But it's not perfect. I think this may have reposted the review link twice, for starters. But I think the next article I post should have the whole thing down pat: WP posts to FB and vice-versa, with no double-ups of the original link-post. Touch wood.

Wow, you really laid into it. But for the most part I can't really disagree. Though I don't think the script was *that* bad.

In its defense the 'shit blows up' bit was set up throughout the film with the alien's influence shorting out power, radios and all that.

The Spielberg-kid thing is definitely a Thing, but I don't think it's any worse for being a trope than any other trope really. At some point, though, I think someone's going to come along and improve on it in ways that refresh this sub-genre.

Heh, I just found the review I wrote when I saw it in September, where I'm less kind: http://damien-wise.livejournal.com/393432.html#cutid2

The film didn't do much for me.
On a technical level, it was quite clever how it was shot with the same lenses/angles/"look" of the films is was paying homage to (and accidentally sending-up).
The train-crash was well handled, they nailed the retro look, and the acting of the three lead kids was very good.
But I couldn't care for the Spielberg-formula characters or the Spielberg-formula storyline. I found myself laughing during the third act when they had a Shit Blows Up sequence for no apparent reason, with tanks and rockets and what looked like an entire suburb getting demolished in a scene cribbed from Saving Private Ryan. I couldn't care less by that point whether it was a re-telling of "Goonies" or "Aliens" or half a dozen Spielberg films...because, essentially, it was E.T. for the ADHD generation.
I actually enjoyed the short film they tucked into the closing titles more than the main feature.
